What are PDE5 inhibitors

Sildenafil Citrate (phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor)

Sildenafil Citrate (phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor)

PDE5 inhibitors are a class of drug commonly used to treat men with erectile dysfunction or impotence.  These drugs also often undergo serious trials to analyze their respective effectiveness in combating high blood pressure.  So far three compounds have been granted permission by the Food and Drink Administration (FDA) to be used as impotence treatments while only one of these, sildenafil, is authorized as a treatment for hypertension.

You’ve probably heard of PDE5 inhibitors before, by their respective brand names Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are the most common but there are also Kamagra, Lovegra and others.

Some of you may have even considered using these drugs at some point, to give you a boost in the bedroom, unaware that they are ideally designed for men suffering with impotence  a disorder that could be argued to be the worst possible problem a man could have.

Impotency can have a damning effect on the psyche.  The inability to obtain an erection will bring about feelings of stress and anxiety, which in turn will only make the problem worse.  Many bouts of erectile dysfunction are attributed to psychological issues.

What do PDE5 inhibitors do exactly?  Their full, un-abbreviated name is phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors.  They prevent the degradation of phosphodiesterase type 5 on cyclic GMP, a chemical compound found in the body which relaxes certain muscles, in the muscle cells which line blood vessels supplying corpus cavernosum of the penis.  In short these drugs help the chemical compound cGMP to arrive at its destination without being degraded.  This cGMP then relaxes muscles in and around the penis thus allowing improved blood flow thereto.

PDE5 inhibitors have been in the public domain for approximately 10 years, since the release of Viagra, and they have met with mixed opinions.

In recent years however these drugs have been taken more seriously.  Large chemist chains around the world have begun selling PDE5’s over the counter, though usually after a consultation with a pharmacist.

PDE5’s are an option available to all men and particularly those suffering with impotence.  You should however remember that these drugs can have side effects and you should consult your doctor, who may ask you to undergo a thorough check up, before purchasing any drug treatments
