Precautions While Taking PRAVACHOL?

• Pravastatin should be avoided if you are allergic to it or any other medications.
• Tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking.
• Cholestyramine (Questran) or colestipol (Cholestid) drugs should not be taken along Pravastatin. Take them four hours before or one hour after Pravastatin.
• You should not have any liver or kidney disease if you are taking a treatment of Pravachol.
• Avoid alcohol while taking Pravachol because it causes adverse effect on the liver.
• Pravachol is harmful for an unborn baby so avoid its treatment during pregnancy. Do not take it if you are breast-feeding also. If you become pregnant while taking Pravastatin, stop taking Pravastatin and call your doctor immediately.
• If you are going to go through any kind of surgery especially dental surgery while taking Pravachol, inform your doctor about it.
• If side effects occur like muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness occurs accompanied by tiredness or fever, consult doctor immediately. These may be symptoms of a muscle condition called rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to serious kidney problems.

What is the Dosage of PRAVACHOL?
Normally recommended dosage of Pravachol is 40 mg once in a day. After few weeks depending on your cholesterol level your doctor may increase or decrease the dose of Pravachol. The maximum recommended dosage of Pravachol is 80-mg. For children between 14 to 18 years of age recommended dose is 40 mg and for children between 8 to 13 years of age it is 20 mg.

Do I Need to Avoid Anything while Consuming PRAVACHOL?

• While taking Pravachol avoid eating high fatty and high cholesterol diets. Pravachol alone cannot do anything in lowering the cholesterol if you do not follow a cholesterol-lowering diet plan.
• Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Pravachol as it raise triglyceride levels, and cause damage to the liver.

How PRAVACHOL is supplied?
Pravachol® (pravastatin sodium) Tablets are supplied as:

• 10 mg tablets: Pink to peach, rounded, rectangular-shaped, biconvex with a “P” embossed on one side and “Pravachol 10” engraved on the opposite side. They are supplied in bottles of 90 (NDC 0003-5154-05). Bottles contain a desiccant canister.
• 20 mg tablets: Yellow, rounded, rectangular-shaped, and biconvex with a “P” embossed on one side and “Pravachol 20” engraved on the opposite side. They are supplied in bottles of 90 (NDC 0003-5178-05) and bottles of 1000 (NDC 0003-5178-75). Bottles contain a desiccant canister.
• 40 mg tablets: Green, rounded, rectangular-shaped, biconvex with a “P” embossed on one side and “Pravachol 40” engraved on the opposite side. They are supplied in bottles of 90 (NDC 0003-5194-10). Bottles contain a desiccant canister.
• 80 mg tablets: Yellow, oval-shaped tablet with “BMS” on one side and “80” on the other side. They are supplied in bottles of 90 (NDC 0003-5195-10). Bottles contain a desiccant canister.

Storage of PRAVACHOL

• Pravachol should be stored at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C).
• Store Pravachol away from heat, moisture, and light.
• Do not store in the bathroom.
• Keep Pravachol out of the reach of children
• Do not keep outdated Pravachol medicine

Warnings
There are some warnings associated with Pravachol which if followed prevents from the side effects occur due to it. Pravachol may cause the serious problem of muscle breakdown also known as rhabdomyolysis can lead to damage of kidney. If symptoms like muscle tenderness, brown urine and weakness happens immediately consult the doctor. Before starting the treatment with Pravachol inform your doctor about all the medications, herbal preparations, and dietary supplements you take. Pravachol can cause liver problems. Your doctor may do a blood test to check your liver before you start taking Pravachol, and while you take it.

• Niacin (Nicolar, Nicobid, Nicotinex, others);
• Gemfibrozil (Lopid), clofibrate (Atromid-S), or fenofibrate (Tricor); or
• An antifungal medication such as itraconazole (Sporanox), fluconazole (Diflucan), or ketoconazole (Nizoral)
